Now, let's get to the interview!
How long have you been in business?
Why did you get started in your industry?
I loved the art aspect of it, and quickly realized that I really wanted to do more with my work so I started capturing portraits. I felt it wasn't enough and I second shot my first wedding and fell in love with the way they looked at each other. I was hooked.
What has been the most rewarding project you have worked on in your career?
I was able to photograph my two best friends gorgeous wedding. It spoke miles to me that they trusted me and my work to give me the honor of capturing their wedding day. I still think those are my favorite images.
What does a day in the life look like for you in your business?
I work from in my home, but I have set office hours that I have dedicated to work. I always start my day with emails and workflow updating through Honeybook (a super awesome workflow manager). Coffee and breakfast are a must after that (because I'm a foodie and easily get hangry. I usually take the afternoon to schedule out social media posting, write blog posts and edit sessions from my queue. If I manage to spend the morning NOT on my phone, I'll sit at lunch with the kids and take some scrolling time. I usually use the late afternoon for playing and shooting if I have a session scheduled. I try super hard to end my work at 5 pm, but we all know that sometimes that just doesn't happen and I start my editing and blogging again after the kids are in bed.
What has been the best investment you have made in your business?
Education. Education. Education. I love Amy & Jordan and Katelyn James beyond words.
What advice would you give to a person just starting out in this industry?
Ask the questions! Find a photographer who you look up to and ask them the questions! You may end up paying a mentoring fee or wind up buying education, but it is worth it. You can't put value into your work until you value yourself enough to educate yourself. It's a fast-paced world out here and if you don't dive in you'll sink. It's 100% scary but that's part of the excitement I think.
